WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
This is a 4-part online workshop series where participants will inquire into the development of a relevant and authentic Service Learning system for their curriculum.
Each workshop is independent. Participants can register for individual workshop(s) or the full series.
Workshops:
W1. Integrating Service Learning in the curriculum approaches and strategies (July 25)
W2. Planning and assessing Service Learning projects: the ASLER checklist (August 1)
W3. Using performance-based assessments to evaluate student achievement (August 8)
W4. Using the ORID method for effective cognitive reflections (August 15)
Participants will receive a certificate of participation
SESSION BREAKDOWN
Workshop 1: Integrating Service Learning in the curriculum approaches and strategies (July 25)
In this workshop, participants become acquainted with the definition of
service learning, the reasons for using it as a teaching strategy, and the benchmarks
that distinguish high quality service learning.
At the end of this workshop, participants will understand:
* The authentic integration of service learning in unit planners
* How to select appropriate service learning
* How to achieve a high service/integrated learning
* How to use the strategies
In this workshop participants will participate in:
* Brainstorming activities
* Discussions
* Group work
* Analysis of models
* Practice
Workshop 2: Planning and assessing Service Learning projects: the ASLER checklist (August 1)
In this workshop, participants become acquainted with planning and
assessing a service learning unit using the ASLER checklist.
At the end of this workshop, participants will understand:
* The planning process of a unit with service learning
* How to use the ASLER checklist before, during, and after the project
* How to assess the outcome of a service learning project
In this workshop participants will participate in:
* Analysis of models
* Discussions
* Brainstorming activities
* Group work
* Practice
Workshop 3: Using performance-based assessments to evaluate student achievement (August 8)
In this workshop, participants analyse the methods used to evaluate student
achievement in Service Learning using performance-based standards.
At the end of this workshop, participants will understand:
* The differences between:
* Norm-referenced tests
* Criterion-referenced tests
* Performance-based tests
* How to use performance-based assessments to evaluate student achievement
* How to create rubrics for cognitive learning objectives
In this workshop participants will participate in:

Workshop 4: Using the ORID method for effective cognitive reflections (August 15)
In this workshop, participants will distinguish among the types of reflection
activities used in their class and evaluate the different purposes for which they design a
reflection activity.
At the end of this workshop, participants will understand:
* The meaning of reflection activities
* The different types of reflections
* cognitive, process, and affective
* How to use the ORID method for reflecting
* The different media used for reflections
* How to use the ASLER checklist to reflect
* How to develop questions for effective cognitive reflections

WORKSHOP LEADER
Loredana is a certified teacher trainer and certified ESL/EFL teacher with over twenty-five years of experience. She started teaching British, American, and World literature, composition, and grammar in international schools in Panama City, Costa Rica, and the United States twenty-five years ago. She spent a year at Ramapo College, NJ where she taught Spanish and Italian as Foreign Languages. Since 2014, Loredana has been teaching in Beijing, China. She has taught IB MYP Language & Literature and Language Acquisition. Loredana has also been the Service as Action and Service Learning Coordinator, and the creator of the Service as Action Assistants program (SAA). Loredana has been presented at TESOL conferences, and led a range of service-oriented workshops in China, and has devised innovative ways to engage teachers in reflection of approaches to writing, grammar, modern poetry and other language aspects. She speaks four languages: her mother tongue, Italian, English, Spanish, French and has basic knowledge of several others including Russian.
