20180217 Concept-Based Foreign Language Instruction: Cultivating Intellect and Socio-Emotional Skills

20180217 - 20180218
Mumbai, India

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

Foreign language teaching is a dynamic discipline: there are things learners must know, there are ideas they must understand, and there are actions they must be able to do. Conventionally, foreign language teachers have focused on four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and have overseen valuable opportunities to use students’ intellectual background knowledge to enrich the learning experience.
Nowadays, due to the exponential growth of information and knowledge, foreign language learners need to take their learning to a higher level of abstraction; they need to demonstrate global citizenship life skills; they need to be active participants in the co-construction of knowledge; and most importantly they need to embrace the responsibility of producing quality information.
Foreign Language teacher need to develop students’ ability to critically think and reason, in order to solve complex problems and create new ideas, and this is a pursuit that can be accomplished through concept-based curriculum design and instruction.
This workshop will help participants answer the following questions:

  • Why is it important for students to learn conceptually?
  • What are the facts, processes and concepts in foreign language learning?
  • How can we use prior knowledge and intellect as tools for concept-based teaching and learning in the foreign language classroom?
  • How does understanding socio-emotional-related language skills contribute to enrich the learning experience in concept-based foreign language teaching environment?
